Project Description:
The Biodiversity Governance Innovation Programme (BioGov) is a five-year (2025-2029), Global Affairs Canada-funded initiative implemented by Alinea International. It supports the Government of Suriname to strengthen inclusive, coordinated, and gender-responsive biodiversity governance, with a focus on marine and coastal ecosystems. Working closely with national ministries, Indigenous and Tribal Peoples, and civil society, BioGov helps operationalize Suriname’s 2024-2035 National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan.
About the Work:
The BioGov project is entering its second year of implementation and is building its operational systems and structures as activities expand. This role is designed to provide meaningful, hands-on experience for students or early-career professionals interested in international development, project management, and monitoring, evaluation, and learning (MEL). The Intern will work closely with experienced team members, including the MEL Manager and Field Project Manager, contributing to the design of MEL tools and systems, supporting project coordination and documentation, and assisting with communications and reporting. The role offers a valuable opportunity to build practical skills in MEL system design, data management, stakeholder engagement, and donor reporting, and is particularly well suited to individuals eager to learn, take initiative, and contribute to a dynamic and collaborative project environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Review key project documents to gain a strong understanding of the project’s anticipated results, implementation strategies, monitoring framework, and partnerships
- Collaborate with the MEL Manager to design, develop, and establish the project’s MEL database and system, including creating templates, tools, and forms to support ongoing MEL activities
- Support the project team in data collection and data entry
- Undertake desk research on the identification and prioritisation of localisation obligations under key B-MEAs and national biodiversity policies, compiling relevant policy and regulatory information
- Participate in project meetings and activities via hybrid or remote platforms, providing logistical support and contributing to documentation (note-taking and follow-up actions)
- Support project communications by capturing photos, videos, and participant testimonials, and assisting in the development and review of communications materials such as blog posts, short articles, social media content, and stories of change
- Ensure compliance with Alinea’s documentation requirements, including obtaining informed consent from participants for the use of stories, photographs, and videos in communications
- Contribute to donor-facing processes by supporting the preparation and review of key deliverables, including semi-annual operations reports and final results reports
- Provide administrative and logistical assistance to facilitate the effective and timely implementation of project activities
- Assist the Field Project Manager with additional ad hoc tasks as required
Qualifications and Requirements:
- An undergraduate degree in sociology, biology, environment, biodiversity and conservation, international affairs, or a related field (essential)
- Computer skills with MS Office (PowerPoint, Word) and other relevant packages (essential)
- Strong communication, writing, and interpersonal skills (essential)
- Fluency in English and Dutch (essential)
- Enrolment in, or completion of, a Master’s programme in a related field (desirable)
- Working knowledge of local languages, such as Sranan Tongo, Indigenous or Maroon languages (desirable)
