MoMHI Gender Policy Consultation Participants

Since 2015, Alinea has been working alongside the Mongolian Ministry of Mining and Heavy Industry (MoMHI) to develop a Gender-Responsive Policy for Geology, Mining, Petroleum and Heavy Industry. On May 6, 2019, the Minister officially approved the Policy, making it the first of its kind for Mongolia’s extractive sector.

Through our Global Affairs Canada-funded Strengthening Extractive Sector Management in Mongolia (SESMIM) project, Mongolia hosted its first national workshop on gender in the extractive sector in November 2017.  In 2018, a broad-based Gender Impact Assessment was completed to support an evidence-based approach to the development of the gender policy.  The policy itself was developed in the fall of 2018 and was reviewed in public consultation in February 2019.

The work was facilitated by SESMIM Gender Specialists Solongo Sharkhuu and Lenore Rogers, and involved ongoing engagement with the MoMHI via the Gender Impact Assessment, policy working groups, and close collaboration with the National Committee on Gender Equality.  SESMIM sponsored workshops and consultations and issued a competitive contract to local gender researchers to conduct field research.  SESMIM also facilitated input from Women in Mining Canada and the Alberta Status of Women to provide training and mentoring on gender policy and capacity building through the contribution program of the project.
