The 10th rotation of Operation UNIFIER on October 5, 2020 marked the launch of Alinea’s new project: Promoting Reform Objectives through Technical Expertise and Capacity Transfer, PROTECT. Larisa Galadza, Canadian Ambassador to Ukraine, presided over this event, which is part of Canada’s military training and capacity-building mission in Ukraine.

Funded by Global Affairs Canada through the Peace and Stabilization Operations program, PROTECT is a CAD 3M project working to improve governance, democratic accountability and civilian oversight of Ukraine’s security sector. PROTECT runs over three years and provides technical assistance and personnel capacity to security sector institutions.

With a focus on transparency, good governance and the rule of law, PROTECT applies a gender-sensitive, inclusive approach and results-based management to support Ukraine’s achievement of reform objectives in the security sector.

Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister François-Philippe Champagne announced PROTECT as part of Canada’s “whole-of-government support” to Ukraine. On December 2, 1991, Canada was the first western country to recognize Ukraine’s independence. Read the Government of Canada news release here.
