September 15 marks International Day of Democracy – an opportunity to review the state of democracy around the world. International Day of Peace follows on September 21, declared by the UN General Assembly as a “day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace.”
As part of the 2023 editions, Alinea is sharing the positive impacts created by key reforms in Ukraine, delivered by projects in Alinea’s Ukraine portfolio, that contribute to both democracy and peace.
Funded by Global Affairs Canada, the Support to Ukraine’s Reforms for Governance (SURGe) Program helps the Government of Ukraine to design and deliver governance and economic reforms. This includes improving management of the national reform agenda by creating a digital tool to align national strategic planning and policymaking with results-based and citizen-centric principles.
Funded by the Department of National Defence and Global Affairs Canada, the Promoting Reform Objectives through Technical Expertise and Capacity Transfer (PROTECT) Project works with senior counterparts in the Government of Ukraine to build the capacity of institutions and agencies across Ukraine’s defence sector to meet internationally-accepted standards of governance, gender equality, performance, and accountability.
Funded with UK aid from the UK Government, the Programme Management Unit for the Good Governance Fund (GGF) designs, procures, and supervises rapid, responsive technical assistance to mobilise reforms in Ukraine. Building capacity within key ministries supports the Government of Ukraine’s ability to reduce corruption; promote transparent and accountable institutions; and build an open, inclusive economy and society.
The Impact Summaries for SURGe, PROTECT and the GGF Managed Fund outline key policy and focus areas, as well as results achieved – directly benefiting Ukrainian citizens, especially the most vulnerable and marginalized.
